Incorporation: Why Create the Town of Oakhurst?
- Incorporation would transfer the provision of certain services from the oversight of the County government to a general law town with 5 Town council persons. Incorporation would create a town occupying about 13 square miles in area with about 4179 residents.
- Since some government functions simply transfer from Madera County to Oakhurst, there is no added layer of government.
- The main reasons to incorporate are:
- Revenue that is generated in Oakhurst would stay in Oakhurst. This means that about $2million that Madera County takes from Oakhurst would come back to enhance services provided to Oakhurst citizens.
- Decisions that affect Oakhurst would be made by our own elected and 100% dedicated Town Council. We can elect them and vote them out of office if they are not responsive to our wishes. Local representatives would be more accessible and accountable.
- Far greater representation of residents in decisions and activities affecting the community.
- Better control of growth and planning.
- Improved roads with guaranteed road fund revenues
- Excellent financial position with annual surpluses and increasing reserve funds.
